Jutland intelligence failed in both directions

German observers reported too many Queen Elizabeth-class ships while Scheer's submarines and reconnaissance failed to reveal the British force approaching him.

Notes

German observers repeatedly reported five Queen Elizabeth-type ships even though Barham, Warspite, Valiant, and Malaya were the four fast battleships present. Scheer received a flood of inaccurate reports, while Jellicoe tended to receive too little information even though reports from his ships were often sounder. The submarine line outside British ports failed to attrit the departing fleet or provide the warning Scheer's plan needed. Other reconnaissance also failed to reveal the larger Grand Fleet danger. Scheer therefore entered the decisive phase with an exaggerated picture of the visible force and no adequate picture of the force beyond it.
