Better shells cannot fix every problem in Beatty's force. Tiger is no longer positioned to relay Lion's flags, Lion does not take over, and Evan-Thomas has not been briefed on Battle Cruiser Fleet procedures. Beatty also uses his speed to open the gap and does not use the pre-engagement interval to reorganize his ships. Poor visibility, smoke, and target allocation leave Derfflinger unengaged while two British ships fire at Moltke. Indefatigable's loss follows vulnerable protection and plunging shellfire rather than British ammunition. Improved projectiles cannot compensate for command-and-control failures that shape who fires effectively in the first place.

Better shells do not repair Beatty's battlecruiser problems
See why visibility, target allocation, and signalling still leave the British battlecruisers exposed on the Run to the South.
