Jutland and the end of the traditional line of battle

Why Jutland can be read as the last major fleet battle still directly connected to the Age of Sail line-of-battle tradition.

Notes

The proposed study of Jutland concentrates on its effect on later naval warfare rather than retelling the battle alone. It was the last great engagement in which opposing battle lines still visibly connected modern gunnery fleets to the Age of Sail. Later warfare increasingly depended on aviation, submarines, dispersed task forces, and combat beyond visual range. Jutland therefore marks both the culmination of decades of battleship development and the limit of the tactical system built around it. The framing asks what navies learned and abandoned after the battle, as well as who won on the day.
