Chapter · 23:32-27:43

Jutland's missed air-reconnaissance opportunity

Aircraft at Jutland mattered most as radio-linked scouts and artillery spotters, but failed communications and Campania's absence limited their effect.

Notes

Engadine and Campania show how immature aircraft could still have improved fleet information. Engadine launched a Short Type 184, but its reports were lost through radio failure, while Campania missed the Grand Fleet's departure after a communications error. The aircraft's most important weapon was its radio and its ability to spot rather than its small bomb load. Better reports on enemy position would not guarantee tactical annihilation, but they could permit earlier deployment, better positioning, and more damaging salvos against the High Seas Fleet.
