Junks and Sampans of the Yangtze

G. R. G. Worcester's field study records the specialized vessels, shipwright knowledge, and river conditions of the Yangtze maritime world.

Notes

Worcester's Chinese customs-service career gave him prolonged access to the river and its working craft. The book emphasizes how shallow water, rapids, broad lower reaches, and the open sea produced hundreds of specialized designs rather than a single generic junk. It records watertight bulkheads, balanced rudders, builders, sailors, cargo, passenger work, and the tools and local knowledge behind each form. Worcester's drawings and historical research preserve technical detail that would otherwise be difficult for an English-language reader to recover. The result is a study of a sophisticated vernacular shipbuilding tradition under pressure from steam and internal-combustion transport.
