Leadership balance aboard small attack craft

A talented junior commander was balanced by a chief petty officer carrying a decade or more of practical destroyer experience.

Notes

Small craft offered unusually early command to young officers, sometimes soon after Dartmouth. A lieutenant might have only a few years of commissioned experience before receiving independent responsibility for a boat. The commanding officer's authority was balanced by a chief petty officer who could bring ten or fifteen years of practical service, often from destroyers. That pairing joined youthful aggression to deep technical and organizational memory. The smallest commands therefore depended on a particularly close relationship between officers and senior ratings.
