How jumboization enlarged the Cimarron oilers

An inserted midsection increased fuel capacity so older Cimarrons could support the larger ships and air groups of Cold War carrier forces.

Question

What was a jumboized Cimarron?

Short answer

A Cimarron enlarged by cutting the ship apart and adding a new midsection, increasing capacity for the heavier fuel demands of Cold War fleets.

Notes

Jumboization cut an oiler apart and inserted an additional section amidships to increase its capacity. The original Cimarrons could support ships of Second World War size, but Cold War forces imposed a larger fuel burden. Conventional supercarriers such as the Kitty Hawks, escorts approaching wartime cruiser displacement, and large numbers of aircraft all contributed to that demand. The rebuilt oilers looked strikingly modern in size and layout despite their older hull origins. Comments on a photograph of one refuelling two ships identify the earlier forward-bridge and aft-machinery arrangement, while helicopter landing spots on the bow show another adaptation.
