John Manley's destroyer naming line and its later interruption

USS Manley continued a tradition honoring Revolutionary War commodore John Manley, whose name had not returned on an Arleigh Burke by the recording.

Notes

Caldwell-class USS Manley, DD-74, was one of several U.S. Navy vessels named for Revolutionary War commodore John Manley. He commanded ships associated with George Washington's early naval effort. The name also appeared on a torpedo boat and later on a Forrest Sherman-class destroyer that left service in 1983. At the time of the recording, it had not been used for an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer. The naming choice draws a personal objection because the long series of new destroyers had offered opportunities to continue that commemoration.
