Jets extended the range and speed of naval attack

The early jet age chiefly increased attack speed and engagement range, forcing navies to improve long-range sensing and resilient communications.

Notes

Jets accelerated changes already underway rather than replacing naval warfare with an entirely new system overnight. Their speed and reach demanded sensors able to find targets early enough for a useful response. Fear of fast aircraft attacking communications exchanges also encouraged adaptable, distributed networks. The naval lesson is that faster weapons reshape the whole detection and decision chain.
