Chapter · 3:12-9:29

Japanese naval aviation before the models

The opening explains why Japan's naval air organization should be read from its 1912 start, not as a later copy of British or American practice.

Notes

The Imperial Japanese naval aircraft squadron system grew alongside its doctrine, so the terminology and operational ideas need to be read together. Accounts that treat Japanese naval aviation as a late import miss its 1912 start and the years when Japan had to devise its own model while other navies were also experimenting. A 1909 call for an independent naval aviation capability and the 1912 research commission place this development before World War I and the later British mission. Japanese naval aviation emerged as an early institutional project shaped by its own training, air-group, and operational requirements.
