Japan's Type 14 and Type 38 motor torpedo boats

The Type 14 combined torpedoes with a light gun, while the Type 38 offered another small design built in comparable numbers.

Notes

Japan's conventional motorboats were small even by fast-boat standards. The Type 38 was about 18 metres long, roughly 4.3 metres wide, and capable of 27.5 knots. The Type 14 displaced about 15 tons and combined a single 25 mm cannon with two 18-inch torpedoes and provision for depth charges. That made it a useful all-round starting point, though its small hull restricted its armament. The production figures distinguish roughly 250 boats built during World War II from about 451 overall, including prewar construction. The Type 14 and Type 38 were among the most numerous individual designs, with 81 and 80 respectively.
