Chapter ยท 0:21-1:54

Japanese hybrid ships and the industrial mismatch

The opening presents Japanese hybrid-carrier projects as emergency answers to a war Japan could not match through industrial production.

Notes

Japan's hybrid ships make sense only in the context of an industrially unequal war. Japan faced Britain and the United States, both capable of producing far more military equipment, even while Britain was fighting in Europe and the Mediterranean. Emergency conversions could create some extra aviation capacity, but they could not close that production gap. Ise and Hyuga therefore introduce a larger failure to match wartime ambitions with industrial resources and force planning.
