A Soviet war could scramble Japanese and Italian alignments

The wider scenario shows how hostility to the Soviet Union might move Japan toward Britain, alter American choices, and leave Italy with several plausible paths.

Notes

In some versions of the scenario, Japan sees the Soviet Union as the greater threat and breaks with Germany to align with Britain. British technical and infrastructure support for Japan could then push the United States to enter the coalition rather than remain outside a changing balance. Italy might stay neutral, join the Allies, or retain its historical alignment with Germany because Mussolini had expected no major war before 1942. This wider chain of possible alliances is framed as educated, logically connected guessing rather than a tightly bounded counterfactual.
