Jamaica's motto and wartime nicknames

Construction dates, the motto Non sibi sed patriae, and the nicknames Fighting J and Galloping Ghost identify Jamaica before her operational history begins.

Notes

HMS Jamaica was laid down by Vickers-Armstrong at Barrow-in-Furness on 28 April 1939, launched on 16 November 1940, and commissioned on 29 June 1942. She remained in service until November 1957 and was sold for scrapping in 1960. Her motto, Non sibi sed patriae, is translated as 'Not for oneself but for one's country.' Wartime nicknames included the Fighting J and the Galloping Ghost of the North Korean Coast. The motto and nicknames became part of Jamaica's service identity alongside her official dates.
