Did Jacky Fisher have good ideas that merely arrived before the necessary technology?
Short answerSome were excellent, especially earlier in his career, but his many later proposals were not all good ideas waiting for technology.
NotesTechnology alone did not frustrate an otherwise uniformly sound visionary. Fisher generated a very large number of proposals, and a high proportion of the ideas from his earlier career through his first tenure as First Sea Lord were valuable. Later in life, some proposals increasingly served to demonstrate that he remained relevant. A reputation for innovation can encourage continued idea production even when the later suggestions are weaker. Fisher's ideas make more sense when assessed across the chronology of his career.
