J. Samuel White builds fast craft and develops the Tribals in batches

The Cowes yard's fast-craft and lifeboat experience framed a Tribal program ordered in batches that let builders and constructors develop their designs.

Notes

J. Samuel White of Cowes specialized in small, fast vessels for the Royal Navy across a company history that ran from the nineteenth century to 1981. Its output also included aircraft, commercial ships, and lifeboats, making the yard an important supplier to rescue organizations as well as the fleet. White built Mohawk, Saracen, and Crusader while the Tribal program expanded through batches of five, two, and five ships. That staged ordering allowed industrial and design skill to develop instead of freezing every ship into one identical plan. The builder's broad fast-craft experience helps explain why it received three Tribal contracts.
