Could Spain simply keep iterating the Furor class and its derivatives?
Short answerYes, but the program must begin earlier than Furor's historical 1896 start and continuously replace front-line boats while moving older generations into reserve.
NotesSpain's purchase of Destructor in 1885 and the later British-built Furor class provide precedents for buying this type of vessel in Britain. The proposed program begins in 1890 and adds improved groups in 1892, 1894, and 1896. Boats displaced from front-line duties would move into reserve. By the hypothetical 1897 confrontation, the Philippines could have thirty-six torpedo boats from three generations, supported by four Edgar-class cruisers and four Centurion-class ships. With trained and organized forces of that size, the encounter with the approaching American cruisers is expected to differ sharply from the familiar Manila Bay outcome.
