Italy needs organic reconnaissance for Mediterranean convoy war

Interservice mistrust makes ship-controlled aircraft essential to Italian efforts to find and intercept fast-moving convoys in the Mediterranean.

Notes

France's rapid ministerial turnover contrasted with Fascist Italy under Benito Mussolini, whose damaging but consistent rule allowed naval planners to work within a longer-term Mediterranean framework. Italy operated largely within range of land-based aviation, but geography did not guarantee useful air support. The Regia Marina could not assume that the Regia Aeronautica would supply timely reconnaissance or follow naval priorities. Cruiser-launched aircraft gave naval commanders direct control over when a search began and what the crew was tasked to find. That independence mattered in a Mediterranean contest built around fast fleets, convoys, and counter-convoy operations between European and North African fronts. Even when a floatplane had to return to a shore base rather than its ship, its launch still supplied the fleet with an organic reconnaissance asset at the decisive moment.
