Would three or four Italian light carriers force Britain to respond with similar ships?
Short answerBritain would still have reasons to prefer fleet carriers with greater strike capacity; light and escort carriers answer different demands.
NotesThe proposed Italian ships would support reconnaissance and air defence. Britain would want additional offensive capacity as well as those functions. An Implacable-type ship therefore remains attractive for the Mediterranean and Far East. A light fleet carrier could grow from a Unicorn-related design when an emergency created demand for more decks quickly. Escort carriers would serve convoy requirements, so their usefulness does not decide the fleet-carrier choice.
