Italy’s Francesco Caracciolo opportunity

Italy is one of the great beneficiaries: it can complete the Francesco Caracciolos and later build a second generation of fast battleships.

Notes

Unlike France, Italy can retire enough old ships to create room for four Francesco Caracciolo-class battleships without a radical redesign. Their speed and armour suit Mediterranean operations, where Italy expects to fight France rather than conduct worldwide commerce warfare. Completion would establish a 28-knot fast-battleship benchmark and give the Regia Marina a prestigious modern battle line while French planning remained trapped by older ships. The later Littorio-type generation could then emerge from a much stronger industrial and operational base, although oil supply and shell-quality control remain practical constraints.
