The Conte di Cavour class formed the foundation of an Italian battleship design lineage. The Andrea Doria class retained the same 13-gun arrangement while improving the concept in several respects. Experience with both classes then supported confidence in the larger Francesco Caracciolo design. The sequence follows the Regia Marina learning through construction and service while keeping firepower, protection, speed, training, and doctrine in balance.
