Were some capital ships inherently unable to survive once the Allies found them?
Short answerNo single design was uniquely doomed, but any isolated capital ship would be unlikely to survive a concentrated fleet and carrier attack.
NotesBismarck could have escaped if she had headed home after Denmark Strait, although British pursuit would still have posed a danger. Once several enemy capital ships and aircraft carriers can concentrate on one isolated ship, survival becomes very unlikely. The same problem applies to Yamato, Warspite, or Iowa. The decisive change is the opposing force's ability to find and focus on the lone ship.
