The 70-meter deck and catapults compromised both halves of the hybrid

The detailed rebuild traded two aft turrets for a short deck, a nine-aircraft hangar, catapults, and restricted arcs for the remaining midships guns.

Notes

The rebuild removed the two aft turrets, sealed their openings with armor, increased anti-aircraft armament, and added a flight deck only about 70 meters long. Side catapults restricted the remaining midships guns, while the hangar held nine aircraft and additional machines occupied catapults or temporary deck positions. Recovery depended on floatplanes landing on the water and being craned aboard; the dive bombers had to land elsewhere. Removing more turrets could have doubled the useful deck length and created a more coherent aviation ship instead of preserving guns that interfered with aircraft operations.
