The Intruder as the carrier air wing's long-range punch

The opening contrasts the F-14's defensive role with the A-6 Intruder's ability to attack threats before they could reach the carrier group.

Notes

The Intruder was the offensive partner to the Tomcat: an all-weather attack aircraft designed to carry a large weapons load over long distances. Its short-field requirement also supported Marine close-air-support operations from rough strips. A hypothetical Queen Elizabeth-class deployment illustrates how modest the A-6's takeoff needs were, although arrested recovery would still require suitable equipment. Air-wing commonality improved efficiency while giving up specialist reach and attack capacity.
