Interwar sloops prepared Britain for mass escort construction

Royal Navy sloop experiments supplied the data behind Flower-class corvettes, Hunt-class escort destroyers, and Black Swan-class escorts.

Notes

Treaty-exempt sloops were built to naval standards and served as ASW escorts, minelayers, minesweepers, and diplomatic vessels. Their exemption depended on limits on displacement, speed, and torpedo armament. The Royal Navy used them to test the smallest viable oceanic escort, its minimum weapons fit, and the depth-charge arrangements needed for anti-submarine work. Admiral Henderson drew on those experiments when preparing for wartime construction. Merchant standards enabled the Flower-class corvettes, while related naval hull work produced Black Swan-class sloops and Hunt-class escort destroyers for different demands.
