Interwar doctrine already considered land aircraft operating from carriers

A 1925 classification of naval aircraft shows that later wartime use of land aircraft from carriers built on a much older conceptual foundation.

Notes

The fighting instructions distinguish seaplanes, land planes, amphibians, and ship planes, then note when ordinary land planes might fly from a carrier deck. This challenges accounts that treat wartime carrier deployment of aircraft such as Hurricanes as an idea invented only under emergency pressure. Wartime funding and availability could accelerate an operation without creating the underlying concept. Prewar doctrine therefore matters when tracing apparent innovations in naval aviation.
