Indomitable's Hurricanes could not reverse Java's collapse

Carrier mobility delivered 48 Hurricanes for Java, but a failed reinforcement convoy and the island's fall showed how little time remained to rebuild Allied air power.

Notes

HMS Indomitable entered the theatre as a major carrier reinforcement and delivered 48 Hawker Hurricanes for Java's defence. The Darwin-to-Timor troop convoy soon failed to get through because movement across the collapsing perimeter was already becoming dangerous. Java capitulated on 9 March 1942, only weeks after the aircraft arrived. The Hurricanes extended resistance but could not compensate for lost bases, interrupted reinforcement routes, and the earlier drain of experienced personnel.
