Indian Ocean trade routes shape the Singapore reinforcement plan

Control of the Suez and South African approaches supported trade defense, while a war with Japan would send the Gloucester group southeast to join Birmingham.

Notes

Norfolk and Enterprise rounded out a cruiser force positioned around the Indian Ocean's dense imperial trade routes. British control at Suez and South Africa complicated hostile access, although German and Italian raiders showed that the sea was never completely sealed. In a war with Japan, Manchester, Liverpool, and Gloucester could turn southeast toward Singapore rather than remain on their peacetime station. Joined by Birmingham, they would form a fast cruiser group able to threaten Japanese maritime traffic through Southeast Asia and the Pacific approaches.
