Chapter · 18:21-20:31

Making the case for Indian sea power

Contentious land borders and the army's political weight make the case for sea power difficult despite India's maritime geography.

Notes

India has extensive maritime exposure, but contentious land borders and the army's political weight still force the navy to argue strongly for funding. Naval outreach helps make that case, while indigenous carrier development demonstrates growing domestic capability. India's position in the Indian Ocean gives its naval expansion significance for global trade, even though commentary often concentrates more heavily on China. Other powers operate in the ocean, but few based in the region appear able to match the Indian Navy as it grows. The combination of maritime importance and competing land priorities helps explain the navy's sustained public advocacy.
