Chapter ยท 4:19-7:17

Eleven boilers, a giant propeller, and 16 knots

Inconstant paired eleven boilers and a 23-foot propeller with a full ship rig, giving her 16-knot steam performance and ocean endurance under sail.

Notes

Eleven boilers fed a single two-cylinder trunk engine from John Penn and Sons, driving a 23-foot propeller and producing 7,360 indicated horsepower. The ship was 337 feet 4 inches long between perpendiculars, with a beam of 50 feet 4 inches, a draft of 25 feet 6 inches, and a complement of 600. Her displacement was reported at 5,875 tons, and the machinery gave a claimed top speed of 16 knots. The stated range of 2,780 nautical miles at 10 knots is an aggregate from several sources and appears to describe coal-burning steam endurance. Her full ship rig did not face the same fuel limit.
