Fisher's deterrent vision depended on staff work

HMS Incomparable embodies Jackie Fisher's belief in bigger ships as deterrents, while exposing how much his technological vision depended on other officers to turn it into practice.

Notes

Incomparable grew from Admiral Sir John Fisher's strategic imagination rather than a conventionally balanced design. Fisher treated greater size as deterrence and saw imposing ships as political instruments that might prevent war. He could conceive new technologies and broad strategic possibilities, then depended on others to turn them into workable ships, doctrine, and staff practice. This division of labour did not make him ineffective, though it made the quality of his team especially important. Incomparable tests what happens when a visionary concept outruns the institutional work needed to employ it.
