What is your view of the Indian Navy's newer warship designs?
Short answerThey are progressing beyond their Russian lineage, but India still needs more design generations to produce ships consistently tailored to its own strategic needs.
NotesThe Indian Navy has extracted substantial design knowledge from Russian assistance and is beginning to branch out on its own. The process may require roughly two more design generations before the results fully mature. A ship can be technically sound and still reflect the operating assumptions of the navy that originated it. Some Russian-derived features therefore make more sense for Russia's strategic circumstances than for India's, making adaptation as important as acquisition.
