Tōgō was one of twelve cadets sent to Britain in 1871, a posting that kept him away through the Satsuma Rebellion and the deaths of three brothers. His studies included Britannia, the Thames Nautical Training College, Greenwich, Cambridge, a long cruise, and Trafalgar observances aboard Victory. He attended church and studied British habits as well as mathematics and naval technique because shared cultural references shape how professionals understand one another. After recovery he inspected the ironclad Fusō while it was being built at Portsmouth for Japan.
