The IMAM Ro.43 offers endurance with a recovery penalty

Italy fields the long-endurance Ro.43 as a mature cruiser scout, but fragile water handling often sends it to shore rather than back to its ship.

Notes

Italy sought depth in cruiser reconnaissance by making a concerted effort to procure more aircraft than immediate requirements demanded. The IMAM Ro.43 developed the earlier Ro.37 into a mature reconnaissance aircraft intended to provide dependable service. Endurance could reach eight and a half hours, depending on the variant, while range depended on fuel loading and operating conditions. Its three-float arrangement provided stability during takeoff on calm Mediterranean water, but an outrigger striking first during landing could snap a wing. Crews therefore often preferred controlled water or a shore landing to recovery beside the cruiser. Ship-launched examples still provided reconnaissance in major Mediterranean actions, including Cape Matapan.
