Illustrious accommodated Sea Gladiators and Fulmars in deck parks when hangar space was insufficient. Outriggers supported an aircraft's tail wheel beyond the deck edge, allowing part of the aircraft to project over the side. That arrangement made more of the limited flight-deck area available. A later photograph of a Corsair on Formidable supplies another example of the equipment's use during the war. The practice qualifies any account of British carrier capacity that assumes aircraft had to be kept entirely inside the hangar.

Deck parks and outriggers make room for extra fighters
Parking aircraft on deck and partly over the side let British carriers accommodate fighters beyond their hangar capacity.
