Ice patrol: moving hazards instead of trying to destroy them

The practical response to a dangerous iceberg is surveillance and rerouting, not treating it as a target for naval gunfire.

Notes

The International Ice Patrol shows why iceberg safety is difficult to fund and still important for shipping. Coast Guard C-130 patrols provide the surveillance needed to identify moving hazards across northern waters. Breaking an iceberg apart can create more hazards, while towing or nudging it away from busy routes addresses the immediate navigation problem. An icebreaker can also ride onto the ice and use the ship's weight to crack it.
