The speed tradeoff in terminal missile maneuvering

Slowing for precise terminal maneuvers can improve a missile's chance of hitting while reducing the defensive difficulty created by its speed.

Notes

At hypersonic speed, even a small change of direction can carry a weapon a long way off its previous course. Precise terminal maneuvers therefore create a tradeoff between speed and control. In this account, many highly maneuverable weapons slow before the final approach so they can turn where they need to and improve their chance of hitting. That reduction in speed also gives up part of the advantage that makes interception difficult. Whether a weapon stays hypersonic throughout its flight matters when comparing claims about its performance.
