Hunter and CSC turn an ASW hull into broader combatants

Australia's Hunter and Canada's CSC add radar, anti-ship and area-air-defence options to a design rooted in anti-submarine warfare.

Notes

The Hunter is described with a larger radar and provision for anti-ship missiles, while the Canadian Surface Combatant combines elements of the Australian and British variants with Canada's Halifax-class experience. Both remain anti-submarine designs, but their weapons make them more broadly useful where their navies cannot field many specialist escorts. Area-air-defence missiles change what these ships can contribute alongside allies as well as what they can defend alone. The segment also notes that mission-bay space is a future trade-off rather than a free capability.
