Hunt and Flower escorts show yard tradeoffs

A Hunt-class question explains why wartime escort output depended on which yards could build destroyers, frigates, or Flower-class corvettes fastest.

Question

Why did the Royal Navy not simply mass-produce more Hunt-class escort destroyers?

Short answer

Hunts were useful, but different yards were better suited to full destroyers, frigates, or Flower-class corvettes, and timing mattered as submarine pressure rose.

Notes

Hunt-class escort destroyers, Flower-class corvettes, and later River-class frigates drew on different kinds of shipyard capacity. Hunts were the better tool where a suitable yard could build them, while Flowers could be produced in far more places. As the war developed, available yards also had to choose between full destroyers, Hunts, and frigates. Escort production was therefore an industrial allocation problem as well as a choice between ship designs.
