Hungary's Danube mission centers on mine clearance

Hungary's river regiment centres on mine clearance, a task made essential by the disruption that mines can cause to Danube traffic.

Notes

In 2020 Hungary's river force belonged to the 1st Explosive Ordnance Disposal and River Flotilla Regiment at Újpest military port in Budapest. Its emphasis on minesweepers reflects the need to keep river traffic moving. Wartime aerial mining illustrates the danger: the RAF and Soviet forces dropped mines into European waterways during the Second World War. Mines that broke loose could drift downstream towards friendly troops advancing upriver, as Soviet forces experienced. Placing mines accurately in smaller rivers was also difficult for a Wellington bomber and easier with a Mosquito.
