Huáscar concentrated two 10-inch, 300-pounder Armstrong guns in a single Coles turret. The arrangement delivered considerable striking power, though it was less flexible than a distributed battery. Four boilers drove one shaft through a horizontal return connecting-rod engine derived from well-understood mining machinery. The engine was reliable but exposed, which made it less suitable for combat. Armour, heavy guns, and dependable propulsion still created a compact ship capable enough to force an outside power to consider what it could safely send to intimidate Peru.
