How HMS Eskimo survived losing her bow

Haida's hull is used to mark where Eskimo's bow broke away and why the torpedo hit spared the boiler rooms.

Question

Can Haida show where HMS Eskimo lost her bow?

Short answer

The failure ran back near the forward escape openings, but the hit stopped short of flooding the boiler spaces, allowing Eskimo to remain afloat.

Notes

The approximate failure line on Haida lies near the forward gun shield and escape openings. The detached section extended back much farther than a casual view of the bow might suggest. The torpedo removed the forward magazine without triggering a secondary explosion, while the next bulkhead kept flooding out of the boiler rooms. A hit slightly farther aft could have opened those spaces and sunk the ship. Eskimo owed her survival to the unusually fortunate hit position and to the Tribal design's ability to remain afloat after severe damage.
