Hood as a global instrument of presence and deterrence

Hood's size, speed, armament, and public image made the ship a traveling demonstration of British power whose purpose extended beyond winning a fleet engagement.

Notes

A foreign observer could see a ship comparable to the strongest vessels in service and then be told that it was not Britain's most powerful capital ship. Hood's eight 15-inch guns, speed, size, crew, and elegant profile made that message visually convincing before any technical comparison began. The uncertainty encouraged observers to imagine that still stronger battleships waited with the Home Fleet. Hood's cruises therefore worked as conflict management: visible capability was intended to make rivals reconsider the costs of confrontation.
