Why was HMS Hood used so heavily around the Spanish Civil War?
Short answerHer size, speed and reputation made her an effective deterrent and monitor against possible German or Italian cruiser involvement.
NotesHMS Hood was the largest and most threatening fast ship Britain could place on the patrol. Her presence helped monitor German and Italian cruisers whose intervention was a serious concern. Renown, Repulse, Tribal-class destroyers and Town-class cruisers also appeared around the same mission. Hood's heavy use served visible naval signalling and surveillance rather than routine cruising without a strategic purpose.
