Why removing Hood's crushing tubes was not a simple modernization

Removing roughly 1,500 tons of crushing tubes from HMS Hood offered weight savings, but replacing the system before 1941 likely required a major machinery rebuild.

Notes

A proposed Hood modernization starts by removing the crushing-tube underwater-protection system. Standard-displacement savings differ from the liquids carried at full displacement, because oil and water could be shifted while fixed structure could not. A nominal 1,500-ton structural saving therefore did not describe every full-load consequence of the change. A useful redesign would probably have required a full reconstruction of the engineering spaces with new machinery and boilers, making the schedule before Hood's encounter with Bismarck difficult.
