Two pilots can honestly claim the same aircraft

An aircraft that appears destroyed can recover briefly and be attacked again, producing two sincere victory claims for one loss.

Notes

A pilot sees a bomber's engine catch fire and watches it dive, then claims a victory. The bomber recovers at lower altitude after the fire goes out. Another pilot attacks and finally brings it down, producing a second claim. In this example, both pilots can honestly believe they destroyed the aircraft, so duplicate claims do not by themselves establish deliberate exaggeration.
