After the expedition commander departed in August 1686, d'Iberville held the captured James Bay posts with only forty men. When no supplies arrived the following summer, he left twelve men at the forts and traveled south and then to France. The French government would not take over the burden, so he lobbied the Compagnie du Nord and secured command of a ship. In 1688 he captured three Hudson's Bay Company vessels attempting to re-establish the English position. Keeping the conquest depended on resupply, minimal garrisons, corporate finance, and initiative by the commander on the spot.

Holding James Bay without resupply
Left with forty men and no replacement supplies, d'Iberville preserved the 1686 conquests through skeletal garrisons, company lobbying, and renewed action at sea.
