HMS Zubian: one destroyer from the remains of two

Chatham Dockyard joined HMS Zulu's bow to HMS Nubian's stern, producing the composite destroyer HMS Zubian despite differences between the original builders' designs.

Notes

Nubian lost her bow to a torpedo in October 1916, and Zulu lost her stern to a mine days later. A Royal Navy constructor judged the surviving halves close enough to combine despite a three-and-a-half-inch difference in beam, and the resulting Zubian commissioned in June 1917. The new name confused German naval intelligence, which knew of no Zubian under construction. She later attacked UC-50 with ramming and depth charges, with divers confirming the wreck after further charges from HMS P12. Zubian also escorted monitors during the First Ostend Raid, whose bombardment succeeded better than the blockship attempt because both old cruisers grounded outside the harbor entrance.
