How a 74-gun ship survived into the air-power era

Bombay-built HMS Wellesley was among the Royal Navy's last 74s and survived until an air attack sank her in 1940.

Notes

The Royal Navy continued ordering 74-gun third rates in 1812 and 1813 and launching them as late as 1817 and 1820. HMS Wellesley was one of the final four 74s, the Black Prince class. She was built at Bombay Dockyard. Her hull survived until a Luftwaffe air attack sank her in 1940.
