Chapter ยท 1:23:15-1:30:59

Wallace covered the seam in Operation Husky's landing forces

A destroyer group guarded the gap between the American and British landing sectors where an attacker might expect divided responsibility.

Notes

Wallace supported the southeastern landing area near the boundary between the U.S. Seventh Army and British Eighth Army sectors. An attacker might exploit the seam by assuming each task group expected the other to cover it. A destroyer screen joined the two landing forces into one defensive system. During the operation Philip and Captain Duncan Carson reportedly used a small flaming raft to draw bombers away, while Wallace also nearly engaged an Allied landing craft whose identity was uncertain. The incidents expose the practical problems of deception, identification, and divided command responsibility during an amphibious invasion.
